Senator Conroy and the ALP are committed to the delivery of world class telecommunications infrastructure for all Australians, to competition in the Australian telecommunications sector and ensuring new regulatory structures deliver on competitive outcomes.
Broadband is central to Labor's telecommunications plan. To this end, Labor has committed up to $4.7 billion to build a fibre to the node (FTTN) network on an open access basis that will deliver a minimum broadband speed of twelve megabits to ninety-eight percent of Australian homes and businesses. The remaining two percent of Australians will receive a standard of service which, depending on the available technology, would be as close as that offered by the new network.
