Peter Harris
Peter Harris has been the Secretary of the Victorian Department of Sustainability and Environment since December 2006. Prior
to his current role, he was Secretary of the Victorian Department of Primary Industries since August 2004.He commenced his career in the Commonwealth Public Service in 1976 in the Department of Overseas Trade and held a number of senior positions before taking up the role of Senior Private Secretary to the Prime Minister from 1989 to 1991. In 1992, he was appointed head of the Industries Branch, Department of Prime Minister and Cabinet.
Peter spent two years on exchange in Canada in the Office of the Privy Council, before returning to the Commonwealth Department of Industry, Science and Technology as Assistant Secretary, Communications and Aviation in 1994. He then held several executive Commonwealth Government roles in transport, eventually becoming Deputy Secretary of the Commonwealth Department of Transport and Regional Services.
In 2001, Peter Harris was appointed to the position of Vice President, Government and International Affairs with the Air New Zealand/Ansett Group.
Peter Harris returned to the Public Sector and moved to Melbourne, with the Victorian Department of Infrastructure as Director of Public Transport in November 2002.
